Michele Spooner, DCAA’s Head Coach, has over 25 years of coaching experience and she has been involved with competitive swimming for 35 years. Coach Shelly swam for Crestmont, in the summer, and Dolphins, in the winter, for over 10 years. She received both the Dolphin’s Patrick McManus Memorial Award for Teamwork and Dedication and the Suburban Aquatic League (SAL) Senior Scholarship Award in 1996. Shelly swam 4 years at Upper Dublin High School where she was a member of the State Champion Lady Cardinals in 1993 and 1994. The 1994 team has since been inducted into the Upper Dublin High School Athletic Hall of Fame in 2020.
Shelly started coaching in the late 1990s as the assistant and then head coach of the Crestmont Clippers. Coach Shelly started coaching for DCAA in 2001. She coached as an assistant for 5 years before becoming the Head SAL Girls Team Coach in 2009 and DCAA Head Coach in 2011. Coach Shelly played a major role in creating DCAA’s USA Swimming Team, a new member of Middle Atlantic Swimming in 2009. DCAA has since produced Junior Olympic qualifiers, Senior Champs qualifiers, Middle Atlantic Age Group and Senior Zone Team qualifiers, Futures qualifiers, nationally ranked age group swimmers, and Middle Atlantic and Eastern Zone Age Group Champions. In 2024, Coach Shelly was the Head Coach of the Middle Atlantic Swimming Tri State Cup Team and Director of the Middle Atlantic George Breen Age Group Select Camp.
Shelly graduated from Lafayette College in 2000 and Pennsylvania College of Optometry/Salus University in 2005. Coach/Dr. Shelly is a practicing eye doctor in Huntingdon Valley and she is currently the Age Group Chair of Middle Atlantic Swimming.
