Volunteer Descriptions

 Starter/Referee
Description: Starts each event with an appropriate starting device; asks whether judges and timers are ready; announces sex, distance and stroke; directs “Take your mark.”; pauses to ensure no early start; gives starting signal and calls false start if needed.

Stroke & Turn Judge
Description: Judges whether proper stroke, turn and finish are executed by the swimmers during the meet.

Place Judge
Description: Observes the finish order for the point-scoring heats (main events). You’ll communicate the finish results to the Score Table. You have no duties during non-scoring heats. You will be moving about the pool deck throughout the meet.

Announcer
Description: Communicates to swimmers, officials, and observers over the public address system. Welcomes the visiting team to our pool, announces the officials for the evening, calls each event so the meet flows smoothly, and announces team scores throughout the evening.

Ready Parent
Description: Lines up our swimmers in the order that they swim. You will organize the swimmers according to the event sheets and lineup prepared in advance by the coach. You will get to meet all the swimmers and give them a word of encouragement as they line up to swim. You will be moving about the starting end of the pool. This position must promote good sportsmanship, monitor behavior and address inappropriate swimmer’s conduct during meets.

Timer
Description: The timer is responsible for timing a single lane during a swim meet. The timer’s primary responsibility is to stop the time using a hand-held wireless timing device when a swimmer touches the wall. You will be moving about the pool deck throughout the meet. Each team supplies three timers at each meet per lane

Runner
Description: The runner takes the event slips from the recorder and disqualification slips from the Stroke and Turn Judges and carries them to the scorer’s table. The runner must deliver the sheets directly to the scorer’s table and not allow coaches or other interested parties to see them in transit.

Scorer
Description: The scorer keeps a running total of points earned by each team. This position works with the other team’s scorer. The scorer receives results for each main event and gives points to first, second and third place. You use a preprinted scoring sheet that is easy to understand. The scorer is seated at the scoring table. A sheet explaining scoring will be available at each meet.

Timing System Handler
Description: Resets timing system.

Volunteer Coordinator
Description: The Volunteer Coordinator is responsible for filling all of the positions required to run the swim season and each swim meet. Serves as focal point for operational issues before, during and after swim meets. A familiarization of swim meet procedures would be helpful, but not required.

Webmaster
Description: The web site administrator maintains the DCAA web site and works with others to ensure all pertinent information is posted in a timely manner.

Awards Coordinator
Description: Orders trophies and ribbons. Organizes the awards and labels.

Time Busters Coordinator
Description: Receives a data file and creates Time Busters Ribbons for swimmers (9 and under) who swam their personal best time.

Set-up/Shut-down Coordinator
Description: Arrives early to set-up timing system, flags, lane lines.
Stays after meet to put away equipment. Prior experience is not required.

Snackbar Coordinator
Description: Coordinate all snack bar procedures, purchasing and activities for meets and all events. Previous experience working snack bar is recommended but not required.
Oversees and coordinates the team snack bar
Checks inventory of supplies prior to time trials (plates, napkins, forks, etc.)
Maintains inventory records
Determines quantities to buy according to size of both teams & weather
Coordinates shopping and food preparation. Needs to be reachable by phone on Friday.
Supervises Snack Bar Volunteers during meet
Oversees snack bar on day of meet from morning set-up to end of meet cleanup
Responsible for cash box during meet
Takes inventory at end of meet
Supervises clean up
